French Bicycle Dating/Meetup Site

My friend E sent us Velibataire.com (in French), a website for meeting one special person, or a group, for a bike ride in or around Paris.

It reminds me a bit of historical dating schemes, where young women were safe on bicycles without chaperones and thus able to better meet young men.

Of course, back then they didn't have a Facebook page!

Now Hear This!

The New York Times reports that bicycling is good for women in their 30s and 40s.

They do cite a Harvard Nurses’ Health Study, so this isn't merely a summary of the obvious, there was actual research involved.

"bicycling is highly beneficial in women" - Amen!

This one's for you Shelly!

bikes in a boat

Riding Pretty wanted photos of bikes on a boat.

While I don't think this is what she meant, I do think they look like they're on their way to summer fun.

This one's for you MamaVee!

adult tricycle painting BostonIt's a painting in a window of a South End boutique, the wheels on that adult tricycle look out of true, but that's part of its charm!

Red Shoes, Red Tail Lights

woman on three speed bike with a packageI loved the pop of her red shoes and lights in the simple green and black.
This photo was taken on MIT campus, the story I made up is that she's got some big presentation wrapped in plastic in her basket there.

Vintage Reflector

vintage bicycleNo doubt that this entire vintage bicycle is pretty cool. However, the rear reflector was unlike any I'd ever seen before.

glass bead reflector on a bike
It looks relatively ordinary at first glance, nestled in the painted design element of the white-tipped fender, but then you see...

glass bead reflector on a bikethose are red glass beads held there, which reflect when illuminated by a flash or a car's headlights. How classic is that?

Bicycles at Moncler Show

I don't know if any of you follow Garance Doré but today she reports on the Moncler show, which appears to have featured both track bikes and also a lineup of more townie-styled bikes. Read the English write-up.

Todos Santos Cycle Chic

Baja Mexico cycle chic
Despite the friendliness in general, Baja Mexico is not the friendliest place for cyclists. On the shoulder-free highway, one white knuckle bus ride has forced me to give up my hopes (for now) of cycling from Tijuana to Cabo San Lucas. However, we did spot this beautiful lady transporting her packages on a bike perfect for Todos Santos.

I have a treat for you

I'm currently on vacation in a tiny corner of the world, but I found a chic cyclist even here! When I get back to Boston I'll have a small treat to share.
Stay tuned!

Men On Bikes Are Sexy

Green Streets Initiative Flyer
Oh yes, they're good role models too, and all that. Still this flyer for the Green Streets Initiative leaves that extremely important aspect out of their call to action.

Whatever reason you ultimately choose, men we'd like to see you riding your bikes.

Ladies of the Street

cheap bikes in an alley

Watch out for them, those cheap ladies hanging around in alleys. They catch your eye wearing their flashy ano and not much else (some even lack saddles!) You know that if you get closer to them you'll end up regretting it...

Old School Raleigh Sports

Raleigh Sports
This bike stood out among her peers due to her vintage perfection. How many Raleigh Sports still have their pumps? Not many.

Surprises from Lexington

Public mixte bike

A work colleague just emailed me to share a new bike shop and a new brand of bicycles. Has anyone out there already visited Ride.Studio.Cafe ? The concept sounds intriguing - high end bike store, community events, art gallery space, and coffee. I am intrigued, and hope to get out there soon to check it out.

When I go there I also really want to see the new Public bikes. In reading about them I didn't get much further than the mixte. I know there are lots of nice features they list, but look! The stock rims and racks match the frames!!!! These folks sure know their market, I'm tickled and hope to start seeing some of these out on the streets of Boston.
